Pet Medical Care

Pet Wellness

Wellness exams are an important part of your pet’s overall health plan. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends annual exams through age seven and bi-annual exams for pets older than seven years old. Regular visits to West Main Animal Hospital allow our veterinary team to evaluate your pet’s health, detect medical conditions as early as possible, update vaccinations, and address parasite control. Annual exams are also a good time to discuss any health, food, behavioral, or housing questions you may have with our veterinary team.

Pet Vaccinations

At West Main Animal Hospital, we believe that one of the most important ways to keep your pet healthy is by vaccinating them against potential diseases. Ask our team about the benefits of protecting your pet’s health through vaccinations and about a recommended vaccine schedule based on your pet’s lifestyle.

Pet Medical Imaging

West Main Animal Hospital utilizes digital radiology, which provides immediate access to clear, accurate images. These X-rays can be useful to quickly identify a variety of conditions, including inflammation, fractures, foreign bodies, and atypical organs and masses. All radiographs are submitted for review by a board-certified radiologist who provides a comprehensive report.

We may also recommend ultrasound services for our patients as they provide a better view of soft tissue and organs. Most ultrasounds can be conducted on-site by one of our partering mobile ultrasound veterinary services . Ultrasound interpretations are provided on-site, with detailed writtn reports delivered within 24 hours.

Pet Diagnostic

The team at West Main Animal Hospital believes that diagnostics are an important part of a comprehensive wellness plan for pets to ensure they live healthier, happier lives.

Pet Dermatology

It’s common to hear people say, “It’s just allergies,” but if you don’t diagnose and treat your pet’s allergies, it could lead to other health problems.

Pollen, mildew, flea or other insect bites, home dust mites, and other allergens can cause mild allergic reactions that may worsen with repeated exposure. If these allergies are not properly managed, whether or not they are recognized, ongoing contact or allergy attacks (regular bursts of acute exposure) can result in worsening symptoms over time. In addition, persistent allergies can result in other issues such as upper respiratory discomfort, ear issues, bacterial skin infections, skin yeast infections, and eye issues. Even after the allergic reaction has subsided or reduced in severity, these secondary problems could persist. Skin, ear, and nasal inflammation are common long-term side effects of allergies.

At West Main Animal Hospital, our vets are here to tackle your pet’s dermatological woes head-on. Contact us for an appointment!

Pet Behavioral Consultation

Pets can have a wide variety of behavioral issues, from house-training problems to severe anxiety and aggression issues. We are experienced in diagnosing and addressing behavior problems with an approach that combines skills from veterinary clinical medicine, behavioral medicine, and pet training. As you learn to communicate with your pet, you’ll watch your bond grow over time.

Pet Urgent Care / Emergency Services

At West Main Animal Hospital, we are aware that not everything goes according to plan. Much like people, our pets are susceptible to unexpected illness or injury. We recognize the stress this places on pet owners. Sometimes, we can see your pet at our hospital, while other situations may require more extensive treatment, testing, and monitoring.

Our knowledgeable staff can help evaluate your pet’s symptoms and determine whether they are truly experiencing an emergency and need immediate attention. If your pet needs to be seen right away, we’ll check if one of our veterinarians is available, whether as a drop-off or at an open appointment time. If we determine that your pet’s situation doesn’t call for immediate attention, we will be happy to assist you in setting up an appointment at the most convenient time possible. We may advise you to take your pet to a nearby emergency clinic if necessary.

If your pet has an urgent medical need, please call us immediately for faster service. We offer limited same-day appointments and urgent care services. (541) 282-9811

Pet Microchipping

As pet owners ourselves, we can't imagine how we'd feel if one of our pets got out of the house and lost its way home. Without microchipping, it's very difficult to locate a lost pet. Pet microchipping is a simple procedure and the most effective method of returning your lost pet to you.

Pet Dentistry

Oral health has a huge influence on a pet's overall health, so our goal is to provide comprehensive preventative and restorative/corrective dental care.

It is common for dental issues to hide below the gum line, so early detection is essential. That is why we include a full set of high-resolution, digital radiographs, along with a comprehensive x-ray interpretation from a board-certified veterinary dentist, with every dental procedure. Our dental services range from regular dental cleanings, to restorative/corrective procedures, to education for at-home care.

Pet Surgery

Our standard of care for every surgery includes the following:

  • Pre-anesthetic laboratory tests, such as blood panels, are performed prior to surgery to identify and minimize surgical risks.
  • We provide the safest injectable and inhalant anesthetics based on each pet's individualized needs.
  • Intravenous fluids are administered to help maintain blood pressure, tissue hydration and organ function.
  • Vitals are closely observed with the assistance of equipment monitoring blood pressure, temperature, heart rhythm, and oxygenation.
  • Our veterinary surgeons employ the most up-to-date surgical practices, making pet safety, pain management, and comfort their priorities.
  • Post-surgery, patients receive one-to-one monitoring by one of our experienced staff members to ensure a safe, comfortable, and complete recovery.
  • Patients typically go home the same day of their procedures. Postoperative care and medication instructions will be thoroughly reviewed with you at discharge, and you can also expect a follow-up phone call from us the following day.

New Puppy

VACCINATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Vaccinations are the most effective way to protect your puppy against life-threatening diseases which can be prevented. The first vaccination, DAPP (Distemper-Adenovirus-Parvovirus-Parainfluenza), will be given at 8 weeks old with a booster following every 3-4 weeks until your puppy reaches 16 weeks of age. Our puppy vaccine protocol also includes a Rabies vaccination as well as parasite treatment and prevention. Based on your puppy’s lifestyle we may also vaccinate for Kennel Cough, a contagious upper respiratory disease.

WELLNESS EXAM: WHAT TO EXPECT

At your puppy’s first visit, they will receive a thorough nose-to-tail physical exam to evaluate your young pet’s overall health. This is a good time to bring up any health, food, behavioral, or housing questions you may have. Our team will also go over a vaccination protocol for your pet, too. We understand every puppy is unique and want to ensure that you and your young pet have the best health care possible through a program designed to meet your pet’s individualized needs.

SPAYING & NEUTERING

Did you know spaying/neutering can contribute to your pet living a longer, healthier life? Spaying/neutering can directly reduce your pet’s desire to roam which can minimize risks of lost pets, injuries, or worse! Spaying/neutering also significantly reduces your pet’s chances of getting certain types of cancer. And, you will be doing your part by not contributing to the massive crisis of pet overpopulation … a win/win! We recommend spaying females after they experience their first heat cycle, and neutering males at approximately one year old. This guideline, however, may be adjusted based on your pet’s breed or circumstances such as behavioral or medical issues that warrant earlier intervention.

HEARTWORM PREVENTION

Any pet that can be bitten by a mosquito is at risk of becoming infected by heartworm, which is a serious, life-threatening parasite. Cases of heartworm are regularly reported in Oregon, and in southern Oregon, we have a higher risk of cases. Because of this, we recommend year-round heartworm prevention for the duration of your puppy’s life in addition to annual testing for heartworm. Your team at West Main Animal Hospital can assist you to find the prevention that is right for your pet.

AFTER THE FIRST YEAR

Some vaccinations may also need to be boostered at these annual examinations. We will send email and text reminders to ensure you stay up to date with necessary veterinary care services.
